Sexsmith Minor Hockey launching program hoping to give more kids a chance to play

Dec 18, 2021 | 7:00 AM

Sexsmith Minor Hockey is looking to get more youth involved in the sport this winter.

The organization is launching a new program in January 2022 called the Pond Hockey Program.

The new program is for anyone born from 2004-2012 and will offer ice sessions once a week to those youth who just want to get out and play or might be interested in learning the game.

“We are so excited about this program we are running. It will be held once a week at the Sexsmith Arena on Wednesdays from 5:15 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.,” explained Sexsmith Minor Hockey President Danielle Hessler.

“It is going to be an unstructured hockey program and a chance for people to come out, have fun, shoot the puck, play with their friends and just have really no commitments tied to it. We are really excited.”

Most parents who do sign their kids up for minor hockey know it is a big commitment, especially at the higher levels. Hessler says they wanted this program to be an opportunity for those parents and kids who simply do not have the time to commit to an entire season of hockey.

“Every year we get comments from individuals in our community that would love to play, but just don’t have the time to commit from September to March or the money to register and travel to play,” Hessler said.

“We had a chance to have a spot for this program and just thought about those conversations that many of our board members had with members in the community. Those board members really put their thinking caps on and kudos to them for giving something back to the community that I think is really going to take advantage of.”

The program is $100 per child and will run until the end of the hockey season in March. It is anticipated to launch on January 12.

While the program does require full equipment, Hessler says Sexsmith Minor Hockey is more than willing to help out and try finding equipment for kids to use if they don’t have any.

“We all have our tickle trunks of equipment sitting in it from kids outgrowing it. We are defiantly willing to help people out with finding equipment and pass it on to them to use. The goal is to make this program as inclusive as possible and open for anyone that has an idea to give (hockey) a try.”
