Grande Prairie man dies after being struck by semi when crossing Highway 43, following previous semi collision

A 21 year old Grande Prairie man was killed while crossing the road on Highway 43, west of Edmonton after being involved in another collision Thursday morning.

On December 23, 2021 at 9 a.m. Mayerthorpe RCMP say they responded to a serious collision on Highway 43 at Nakota Crossing, east of the Hamlet of Glenevis.

Following a preliminary investigation, police believe a car travelling in the left lane lost control and struck a semi-tractor driving in the right lane, both allegedly travelling northbound.

Police say following the initial collision, the car pulled off to the left shoulder and the semi tractor pulled to off to the right shoulder.

A 21-year-old Grande Prairie man driving the car, allegedly got out of the vehicle to speak with the 39 year old semi driver from Calgary.

Authorities say the when the Grande Prairie man was crossing the highway, he was then hit by another semi going northbound.

The 21 year old man from Grande Prairie was pronounced dead on scene.

Mounties say a 21 year old female who was the passenger in the car from Grande Prairie along with the 39 year old male semi driver from Calgary, as well as the 32 year old semi driver from Edmonton who was involved in the second collision were not physically injured.

The RCMP Collision Analyst reportedly attended the scene to assist with the investigation and divert traffic until roughly 2:40 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

Road conditions were reported to be covered in snow and ice in the area at the time of the collision.

The name of the 21-year-old Grand Prairie man will not be released, however authorities say the next of kin has been notified.

Police say the collision is under investigation however no further updates are anticipated.
