Grande Prairie RCMP arrest suspect involved in multiple incidents

RCMP have charged a 34-year-old man following an alleged weapon assault in Grande Prairie on Thursday.

Police say they responded to an assault with a weapon at noon on December 23 in the area of 117 Avenue and 100 Street.

Upon arrival, officers say they found an adult female who had been assaulted with a knife, however the suspect reportedly fled the scene prior to the arrival of police.

Authorities say the assaulted female was transported by EMS to the hospital with serious but non life threatening injuries.

Roughly one hour later, the Grande Prairie RCMP reportedly received a complaint of a carjacking in the area of Hillcrest Drive and 96 Street, which police say was involving the same suspect.

Mounties say the adult male owner of the vehicle sustained minor physical injuries.

According to authorities, the suspect then drove the stolen vehicle to a house where he then, allegedly assaulted another adult male with a knife. Police say the suspect and the assaulted male were both known to eachother.

The male victim was transported to the hospital with serious but non life threatening injuries.

The RCMP says officers located the suspect driving the stolen vehicle and maintained surveillance on the suspect.

Grande Prairie RCMP detachment officers along with the General Investigation Section, Special Investigations Unit, Police Dog Services, ALERT, Combined Enforcement Special Enforcement Unit, until he was arrested without incident by the Grande Prairie RCMP as well as the General Investigation Section, arrested the suspect without incident.

Police say 34-year-old Brian Russel from Grande Prairie is facing several charges including:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Uttering threats (x2)
  • Robbery with a weapon (x2)
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Fail to comply with release orders (x6)
  • Unlawfully in a dwelling house
  • Posession of a controlled substance

Following a judicial hearing, Russell has reportedly been remanded in custody and is set to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial court on January 5, 2022.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information can be provided.
