Fireworks, indoor festivities planned for New Years Eve in Grande Prairie

Dec 31, 2021 | 6:00 AM

Fireworks and indoor festivities are still going ahead for New Year’s Eve in Grande Prairie.

City of Grande Prairie Programming and Events Supervisor Hayley Kramps says due to the cold weather forecasted to hit the region, they opted to cancel the outdoor events at Muskoseepi Park.

“We do have some limitations and if the weather feels like minus 35, certain components will be canceled such as the wagon rides and any entertainment that requires guests to be outside for long periods of time.”

However, Kramps adds the indoor activities planned along with the annual firework show are still being given the green light.

Indoor activities at the Ernie Radboune Pavillion include a New Year’s Resolution Tree for residents to have their resolutions showcased, along with a festive, pet-friendly photo booth for families to take holiday photos at.

“Pets are allowed inside the pavilion and it’s one of those things that nobody really ever does so, we’re encouraging people to bring all members of their family and participate in the celebration,” Kramps said.

New year’s resolutions can be sent to programming@cityofgp.com, the Muskoseepi Park Facebook page, or in person at the pavilion, where they will be printed off and placed on the tree.

Fireworks are also scheduled to launch at 10 p.m. at Muskoseepi Park and the CKC East Field.

Kramps adds people are asked to stay inside their vehicles for the firework show.

“They are visible at a lot of places in town and we’re really excited to be able to offer them again, I think it’s probably my favourite part of the new year’s celebration.”

All provincial health protocols will be in place for the event, including reduced capacity and masking indoors.
