February 19, 1923 – January 6, 2022
It is with heavy hearts, we mournfully announce the passing of Frieda Wood who went to be with her savior on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at Mackenzie Place in Grande Prairie, Alberta at the age of 98 years old. She was born in Saskatchewan to Henry and Danieda Busch and attended school at St. Boswell’s School by Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan where she met Donald Wood and married him at the age of 20.
After they were married, Dad was sent overseas to fight in WWII and Mom, while pregnant, went to Oshawa, Ontario to assist in the making of ammunition to help with the war. During that time, alone, she lost that baby but carried on as she had to and continued with her work until Dad came home.
They then bought a small farm between Gravelbourg and Kincaid and had two children, Bernadine and Russell. After some very bad years due to drought, hail, etc. they made the decision to move, they loaded up what they could and came to Grande Prairie, Alberta in 1961.
Mom worked at Safeway for many years, as well as Warehouse Foods, but then her and Dad both decided to work at the hospital until they both retired.
Mom loved to garden and always had prize winning tomatoes. Her flower beds were the talk of the neighborhood and she relished in talking to anyone who wanted to know the name and the way to take care of the flowers.
Mom could often be found at the Legion where she was a member of the Grande Prairie Legion No.54 Ladies Auxiliary and proudly served for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Bernadine and son-in-law, Douglas, children, Tamatha (Chris) and Candace (Bruce) and their children, Stefan (Jess and Darius), Shane and Ava: her son, Russell and daughter-in-law, Louise, and 3 stepchildren, 4 step grandchildren and 1 step great granddaughter.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Danieda and Henry Busch, her brothers Bill, Adam and Heinrich as well as sisters, Ida and Hilda and her husband Donald Wood.
The family of Frieda would like to express their extensive gratitude to Dr. Noga and all the nursing staff at Mackenzie Place who treated Mom with kindness and respect that made her last days as comfortable as possible. A huge thank you to Amber Wills who treated Frieda like one of the family. Your compassion will never be forgotten.
A funeral will for Frieda will be on Monday, January 17th at Trinity Lutheran Church, 10407 100 Street Grande Prairie at 2:00 pm. with a Tea to follow at the Grande Prairie Legion, 9912 101 Avenue, Grande Prairie.
