Grande Prairie records 57th COVID-19 related death, 16 new cases

One death was reported to Alberta Health in Grande Prairie as a result of COVID-19 complications for Monday. There have now been 57 COVID-19 related deaths in the Swan City since the start of the pandemic.

Alberta Health says the death in Grande Prairie was a male in their 70s, with pre-existing health conditions.

It was the lone death reported in the North Zone over the past 24 hours and was one of eight deaths reported across Alberta for January 10. Province-wide, 3,352 people have now died as a result of COVID-19.

The City of Grande Prairie recorded 16 new COVID-19 cases along with 11 recoveries for January 10, bringing the active number of cases to 287 (up four).

The County of Grande Prairie added 10 new cases and two recoveries over the past 24 hours. It now has 126 active cases (up eight).

Across Alberta, 4,704 new cases were identified from 12,201 tests taken. The test positivity rate sits at 38.5 per cent. There are now 58,613 active cases in the province.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of new COVID-19 infections in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Active case totals, as of January 10 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 287 active (+4)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 126 active (+8)
  • MD of Greenview: 47 active (+2)
  • Birch Hills County: two active (-)
  • MD of Spirit River: 10 active (-)
  • Saddle Hills County: three active (-)
  • MD of Peace: 53 active (+3)
  • MD of Fairview: 14 active (+1)
  • MD of Smoky River: 11 active (-2)
  • Big Lakes County: 45 active (+2)
  • Clear Hills County: four active (-1)
  • County of Northern Lights: five active (-2)
  • Northern Sunrise County: six active (+4)
  • Mackenzie County: 48 active (+2)

Across the province, hospitalizations increased to 708 (up 73), with 80 of those patients in the ICU (up eight). Of those in the hospital, 211 are unvaccinated, while in the ICU, 50 of the 80 patients are unvaccinated.

In the North Zone, 67 people are in hospital (up four), five of whom are in the ICU (same).

To date, 89.6 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 85.6 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.
