Winter storm warning issued for Grande Prairie region

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for the Grande Prairie-Beaverlodge-Valleyview forecast area. A watch had been issued earlier in the day on Sunday.

The weather office says the winter storm will bring heavy snow, freezing rain, blowing snow, and a rapid drop in temperatures.

The watch is also in effect for the Peace River-Fairview-High Prairie-Manning forecast area, as well as the Whitecourt-Edson-Fox Creek-Swan Hills, Hinton-Grande Cache and Slave Lake forecast areas.

Patchy freezing rain is expected to begin Sunday night between Edmonton and Grande Prairie.

Motorists are reminded to watch for icy conditions along area highways including Highway 2, 16 and 43.

The weather office says heavy snow is set to begin Monday morning over the Peace Region and will move to the southeast through the day bringing up to 15 cm, the heaviest snow is forecasted to fall west of Swan Hills. Heavy snow is expected taper off in the evening.

Wind gusts up to 70 km/h are expected Monday afternoon and evening, and will taper off overnight.

Temperatures are also expected to drop rapidly by 10 to 15 degrees.
