Grande Prairie records 10 new COVID-19 cases, 38 recoveries

The City of Grande Prairie recorded 10 new COVID-19 cases along with 38 recoveries for January 18, bringing the active number of cases to 369 (down 27).

The County of Grande Prairie added five new cases and 14 recoveries over the past 24 hours. It now has 99 active cases (down nine).

Across Alberta, 3,837 new cases were identified from 10,005 tests over the last 24 hours, resulting in a test positivity rate of 38.1 per cent. There are now 67,534 active cases in the province.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of new COVID-19 infections in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Active case totals, as of January 18 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 369 active (-27)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 99 active (-9)
  • MD of Greenview: 54 active (-3)
  • Birch Hills County: zero active (-1)
  • MD of Spirit River: 11 active (-)
  • Saddle Hills County: four active (-)
  • MD of Peace: 54 active (-3)
  • MD of Fairview: 12 active (-5)
  • MD of Smoky River: 10 active (-1)
  • Big Lakes County: 74 active (-1)
  • Clear Hills County: five active (-)
  • County of Northern Lights: 14 active (+2)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 15 active (+4)
  • Mackenzie County: 45 active (-12)

The province also saw hospitalizations increase to 1,101 (up 12), while ICU patients increased by to 108 (up four). Of those in the hospital, 306 are unvaccinated, while in the ICU, 60 of the 108 patients are unvaccinated.

In the North Zone, 69 people are in hospital (up four), seven of whom are in the ICU (stable).

There was one more death reported by Alberta Health as a result of COVID-19, 3,413 people have now died from COVID-19 in Alberta. A death in Grande Prairie was taken away by AHS and moved to a different health zone. There have now been 56 people who have died as a result of COVID-19 in the Swan City.

To date, 89.9 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 85.9 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.
