Police investigating fatal house fire in Spirit River

RCMP officers are investigating a fatal house fire that occurred in Spirit River on Wednesday afternoon.

Mounties say around 12 p.m. on January 19, they responded to a report of a house fire in the area of 45 Avenue and 49 Street in Spirit River.

After fire crews extinguished the blaze, human remains were reportedly found inside the home.

Spirit River RCMP in cooperation with the Office of the Fire Commissioner and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are continuing to investigate this incident.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Authorities say the deceased has been tentatively identified but confirmation of the identity, as well as the cause and manner of death, will be made at an autopsy which has been scheduled for a later date at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton.
