Court update: Sentencing in three cases, trial dates set in two others.

Jail time in sexual assault cases

A man charged in late 2019 after what Grande Prairie RCMP called at the time several reports of alleged sexual offences against young people has been given a total of four years in jail.

He will get two years credit for pre-trial time already spent in custody.

A court-ordered publication ban prohibits the release of any information that would identify the victims.

The man charged had pleaded guilty on September 29, 2021, and was sentenced January 19, 2022 in Grande Prairie court.

He was given a 730-day sentence after pleading guilty to a charge of sexual assault in one case. A sexual contact with a child charge was withdrawn.

He was also given a consecutive 548-day sentence and another consecutive 182-day sentence after guilty pleas of sexual assault. Charges of sexual contact with a child and sexual counselling of a child in the second case were withdrawn.

RCMP said at the time the victims were known to the accused.

Trial dates set for accused in what RCMP call “a crime spree”

Alberta Justice says trial dates have been set for what Grande Prairie RCMP called at the time “a crime spree.”

The trial for Tyren Field is scheduled for September 27, 2022. He was charged after several incidents on October 2, 2021.

RCMP said at the time that they got a report of an armed robbery at 84 Avenue & Resources Road. A man with an edged weapon demanded money, but left without taking anything.

About half an hour later, police got a report of a break-in at a County of Grande Prairie home. The suspect stole some tools and a vehicle and tried to assault the property owner.

About an hour after that, the same vehicle was set on fire in a field behind a Grande Prairie school.

An arrest was made shortly after that.

Sentence given after laser pointed at aircraft

Alberta Justice says a man charged after incidents last May when a laser was pointed at an aircraft and a vehicle has been given a fine and one day in jail.

Connor Layher pleaded guilty to a charge of creating a safety hazard under the Aeronautics Act for which he was given a $1,500 fine.

He also pleaded guilty to a charge of resisting a peace officer for which he was given the day in jail.

Layher was sentenced January 20, the same day he was set to stand trial. Four other charges were withdrawn.

RCMP said at the time that on May 12, 2021, they got a call at just before 3 a.m. about a laser being pointed at an aircraft, something that disrupted the pilots.

Not long after, another call came in about a laser being pointed at a vehicle that distracted the driver.

An RCMP member also had a laser pointed at their body and face.

Mounties then found the home where the laser was coming from. The person inside refused to answer the door. Police went in, made an arrest, and seized a laser pointer.

Jail sentence after accused in forgery, B&E cases pleads guilty

Alberta Justice says a Grande Prairie man charged in two cases, one involving break-ins and another fake IDs, has been handed 240 days in jail.

Kevin Stolth was sentenced in Grande Prairie court. He was given 175 days credit for pre-trial time spent in custody.

Stolth and three other people were charged after a search at a Westpointe home on November 15, 2020, resulted in the seizure of fake documents that included firearm possession and acquisition license cards, and cheques, identification cards, phoney cheques, and fake credit and debit cards.

Stolth pleaded guilty to charges of careless use of a firearm, making/possessing identity documents, and possession of a forged document and was given 60 days in jail

All charges against another accused, Sarah Hart, were withdrawn. Another man, Jason Weatherall, pleaded guilty to a single charge of making or possessing an identity document and was given a $300 fine.

The fourth person charged, Dillan Redekopp, has a trial set for April 19.

Stolth also pleaded guilty to related to an arrest in February of 2021. He was given another 180 days in jail after pleading guilty to unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of stolen property under $500 and two more of failure to comply. Ten other charges were withdrawn.

He and another man were charged after reports to Grande Prairie and Beaverlodge RCMP of what police said at the time was more than a dozen break and enters, some of which involved ATMs being tampered with or stolen.

A search of a home in the Pinnacle area of Grande Prairie turned up stolen property, a loaded shotgun, brass knuckles, a spring-loaded knife and 10 grams of crystal meth.

A warrant for the second man charged in this case, Michael Joseph Hillenga, has been out since he failed to show up for a court appearance September 29, 2021.

Two other charges against Stolth in which he and Hillenga were both involved were withdrawn.

Trial date set after August drug, weapons arrest

Alberta Justice says a trial date has been set for a man charged after drugs and weapons were seized during an arrest August 12, 2021.

The trial for John Wolitski of Grande Prairie is set for December 7, 2022.

RCMP said at the time that they were on patrol out in the country just after midnight when they saw a man they knew to be on release conditions that included a curfew sitting in a vehicle parked at a home.

Police said the man was arrested after police saw evidence of drug possession.

A search of the man turned up a pocket knife, 142 grams of crystal meth., and 30 grams of fentanyl.

A search of the vehicle turned up a loaded handgun, loaded shotgun, ammunition, 1,100 oxycontin pills, 24 grams of crack, 19 grams of crystal meth., five grams of fentanyl, scales, baggies, and other items used in selling drugs.
