October 9, 1937 – January 25, 2022
Joan Muriel Sandboe, 84, of Buffalo Lake, Alberta, passed away on the morning of January 25, 2022, following a sudden diagnosis and short but courageous fight with cancer. A cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Joan will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Born in Speers, Saskatchewan on October 9, 1937, to Otto and Agnes Rude, Joan and her family moved to the La Glace area when she was nine, where she attended school and met the love of her life, Chester Sandboe. Chester and Joan were married in 1955, and in 1956 they welcomed their eldest son, Dale, followed by their daughter, Cindy, in 1958. In 1962, their second son Curtis was born, and that year they also moved to the farm that would be their home for the next 50 years.
Joan brought their home on the farm to life, and it became a very special place for family, friends, and neighbors to gather. She saw the good in everyone, and she led by example. Just being in her presence was enough to make us all judge a little less harshly and speak a little more kindly. She was a soulmate to Chester, and their marriage is an inspiration and a testament to the gentle, loving kindness they showed each other for over 70 years. Joan was a mother to three, and a maternal figure to many. She will be remembered for how well she cared for those around her, making sure everyone was well fed, well loved, and in good spirits. Whether she was cooking, baking her famous buns, gardening, camping, knitting, playing cards, or texting her grandkids, her compassion, good humor, and warmth shone through and endeared her to so many.
Joan is survived by her husband Chester, sons Dale (Cindy) and Curtis (Tracy), son-in-law Ed, brother Dennis (Brenda), sisters-in-law Kristine and Ruby, lifelong friends Iris and Vivian, and grandchildren Dustin, Tysen, Karly, Janelle, Jordi, Ashli, and Kjelt. She was predeceased by her daughter Cindy, parents Otto and Agnes, brothers Irvin (Elsie), Myron (Doris), and Floyd (Margie), sisters Eileen (Ken) and Doris, and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at 1:30pm at the Calvary Lutheran Church in La Glace, with interment at Norden Cemetery and a reception to follow. For those unable to attend in-person, the service will also be live-streamed.
