County records 15th COVID-19 death, Grande Prairie adds 43 new cases

The County of Grande Prairie recorded its 15th COVID-19 death on February 1. It was one of 14 deaths reported to Alberta Health over the last 24 hours. To date, 3,593 Albertans have died as a result of COVID-19.

Meantime, the county recorded 16 new COVID-19 cases along with 10 recoveries, bringing the total number of active cases to 170 (up five).

The City of Grande Prairie added 43 new cases of COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, along with 43 recoveries, 446 active cases remain in the city (same).

Across Alberta, 3,024 new cases were identified from 7,643 tests, resulting in a test positivity rate of 39.5 per cent. There are currently 34,877 active cases in the province.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of new COVID-19 infections in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Active case totals, as of February 1 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 446 active (-)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 170 active (+5)
  • MD of Greenview: 87 active (+1)
  • Birch Hills County: three active (+1)
  • MD of Spirit River: 15 active (-1)
  • Saddle Hills County: two active (-)
  • MD of Peace: 85 active (-)
  • MD of Fairview: 23 active (-)
  • MD of Smoky River: 45 active (+13)
  • Big Lakes County: 85 active (+8)
  • Clear Hills County: six active (-1)
  • County of Northern Lights: 13 active (-)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 23 active (-1)
  • Mackenzie County: 59 active (+2)

The province saw hospitalizations increase to 1,598 (up 13), while ICU patients decreased by three to 106. Of those in the hospital, 415 are unvaccinated, while in the ICU, 53 of the 106 patients are unvaccinated.

In the North Zone, 105 people are in hospital (down two), seven of whom are in the ICU (same).

To date, 89.8 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 86.1 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.
