Jonathan James Holowatiuk (JJ, JH, Jonnyboy)
January 10th, 1990 – February 1st, 2022
We are tremendously sad by the loss of our son and brother. Our hearts are heavy.
Jonathan was the biggest sports fan in our family, always cheering for the Roughriders, Bears, Raptors, and of course, the Maple Leafs. He held onto data and stats like no other person we know. It was no surprise that he took on the role of commentator for the Sexsmith Vipers and he always felt so admired when his family would tune in to listen to him broadcast the game. It was a big moment when his sister and brother-in-law took him to not only his first Leafs game, but his first NHL game in Edmonton and when the family visited California, it was only fitting that the three of them went to experience their first NBA game at the Staples Centre.
Along with sports knowledge, he knew movies and actors like you wouldn’t believe. You could give him a brief description and he’d be able to name the title and stars instantly. He could always remember who he watched a specific movie with and reference that movie to bring out a laugh.
Jonathan had an animal-loving heart. He was known as the cat whisperer because any time he came around his parents’ house, the neighbors’ cats would show up. He also loved working with his crew at Fraction and there was nothing, absolutely nothing he enjoyed more than the family gatherings he attended.
Jonathan is predeceased by his Gido Joseph, Gido Edward, Baba Elsie, Aunt Brenda, and many pets. He is survived by his parents Brad and Jean Holowatiuk, sister Kayla (Branden) and nephew Preston Devaux, grandparents John and Marge Holowatiuk, along with several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Jonathan is going to be heavily missed. We find some comfort in knowing he is now at peace. From the bottom of our hearts, we want to send a thank you to each and every one of you that encouraged Jonathan to seek help.
An informal Celebration of Life will be held from 1:00pm – 4:00pm on Sunday, February 20th, 2022 at the Sexsmith Civic Center. We would love it if you took the time to share a story or memory of Jonathan during this time.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association (Alberta Northwest Region) or Bandaged Paws.
