Mayor looking forward to proper facility capacity, less conflict, with COVID restrictions lifting

Feb 9, 2022 | 6:00 AM

City council voted to end its rapid testing and vaccination policies for city staff 24 hours after the province lifts its Restrictions Exemption Program at Monday’s meeting.

The province ended the REP at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday night.

“Personally, I look forward to our facilities going back to their proper capacity. I look forward to our ratepayers being able to use the facilities to their full potential.”

“I look forward to neighbours to not be at a contentious state.”

Clayton says people seem to be disagreeing on restrictions every day.

“We seem to be disagreeing with our neighbours on a regular basis and by neighbours that could be your own personal neighbour, it could be the person at the desk beside you, it could be in the coffee shop.”

“There is continual conflict and confrontation on discussion around these mandates and I look forward to when we can talk about other great things that are happening in our community and in our region.”

Clayton says the response to the city’s policies from employees was about the same as from the general population.

“(A) significant majority of our staff reached out were in favour of this. We did hear from a smaller group that they were opposed to this.”

Clayton says this means a better “corporate culture” for city departments as it removes a source of conflicts.

In response to the Province’s lifting of the Restriction Exemptions Program, all City facilities will no longer require proof-of-vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test, effective February 9th. .
