March 3 is national Soup It Forward Day.

The annual day urges people to help spread love and generosity with a bowl of soup.

Co-Owner of Mud Puddle Farm’s Rustic Kitchen Sue Bouchard says this day was invented so it can be more accessible for everyone to get a nice warm meal.

“It was started by the ‘Soup Sisters’ in Calgary – an organization (where) they take popular chefs (who) make up soups and then people can buy the soups made by that chef and they can sell them and give them to people. They started Soup It Forward Day so it’s more accessible for everybody to be able to get soups,” Bouchard explained.

Essentially, for every soup that is purchased on March 3, Mud Puddle will match that donation and give it to a local organization that could use it.

This year, Mud Puddle will be donating hot soup dinners to the St. Lawrence Centre and freezer soups to residents at Odyssey House.

Bouchard tells EverythingGP they chose to donate soups to these organizations because they have a big impact on everyday people in the community.

“As a young mom I always struggled for different reasons, so we wanted to choose charities that were really well needed,” she said.

“We’ll take a hot soup over to St. Lawrence Centre and they incorporate it into their daily meal of the day, so we love that. We take freezer soups to the Odyssey House, so that makes it easier for them because they can just have it when they are ready to have it.”

Bouchard feels they are in for a big year this year, as they are getting lots of help from businesses in the area.

She says they want to hit a new fundraising record.

“I want to hit the $2,000 mark in total. Having Shade Tree, Chocolate Studio and the Sand Zone already pre-purchasing and doing extra the days they have the soup, I’m really hoping we can get there.”

Mud Puddle will be selling both a cheesy broccoli and a farmers sausage and white bean soup.

While Soup It Forward Day is only one day out of the year, Mud Puddle has also created something called soup-match-love days, which allows for Mud Puddle to donate to organizations throughout the year.

In the past two years, on soup-match-love days and the annual Soup It Forward days, Mud Puddle has donated over $1,500 in soups (hot & frozen) to local charities.
