March 13-19 marks Canadian Agricultural Safety Week

Mar 14, 2022 | 4:36 PM

This week is Agricultural Safety Week across Canada.

The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association is calling on farmers, ranchers, hired hands and others involved in agriculture to create farm safety plans and to talk about and value safety.

CASA CEO Andrea Lear says farm safety is about more than knowing what hazards are around.

“Farm Safety is also about changing unsafe behaviours and habits, understanding the positive business case for incorporating safety on farming operations and addressing what it truly means to value safety and health,” she explained.

“This year, CASA is excited to host conversations about making meaningful and long-lasting change for the health and safety of everyone that lives, works, and visits farms and ranches.”

A statement from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau says farms are not only workplaces but homes and playgrounds for children.

“While new technologies and advanced equipment make farms more productive, they can bring new risks. An injury sustained on the farm can be devastating — both emotionally and economically – to producers and their families. The dangers are physical as well as mental: work and hours can be exhausting, and sometimes very stressful.”

Yet most injuries are predictable and preventable if producers, farm managers and farm workers know what to look out for and how to avoid on-farm hazards. It’s human nature to forget about your well-being and safety when you feel overwhelmed.”

People are asked to take part by posting photos or videos on social media using #FarmSafetyEveryday.
