Application deadline Thursday for county’s annual roadside clean-up program

Mar 21, 2022 | 12:58 PM

Local non-profit organizations and groups are being reminded that Thursday is the final day you can apply to participate in the annual roadside clean-up program.

The annual program has organizations across the region pick up garbage from the sides of the county’s roads in exchange for a cash incentive they can use to put towards their organization.

In 2021, the program had 32 non-profit groups clean nearly 285 kilometres of roadside and collected 12 tonnes of garbage.

Technical Services Manager for the County of Grande Prairie Jennifer Besinger says it’s important to get those applications in now as demand for this program is often very high.

“We have several groups (who participate) and it varies pending (applications). We always have more applicants than we have routes available,” she explained.

“So, it is important to get your application in and we always do a selection process after.”

Besinger says they try to accommodate as many groups as possible to allow them to participate in the program.

“We do a group assessment on the applicants and go from there. With the roadside clean-up, there are very different zones of the clean-up, so we like to try and match the zone with the area of the non-profit community as well,” Besinger added.

Besinger describes this program as a win for both county residents and non-profit organizations.

“This program has been just fantastic to get some win-win’s with the money into our community with the non-profit organizations, as well as to get our roadsides cleaned up on an annual basis.”

You can submit an application at the county’s website.

Last year, the county distributed over $53,000 to non-profit groups.
