RCMP in Whitecourt say the Western Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit were able to locate a vehicle being driven by a wanted man in the town on March 18.

Police say they attempted a traffic stop, however, the vehicle fled from police and took off driving in a dangerous manner.

Shortly after the suspect had fled, officers were able to locate the vehicle. Once the vehicle was located by police, the man attempted to ram a police vehicle before becoming stuck.

The driver was taken into custody. A search of the vehicle turned up a loaded firearm.

Fifty-year-old Kelly William Dwyer of Woodlands County was arrested for seven outstanding warrants and is now facing the following additional charges:

  • Flight from police
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Possession of a firearm in a vehicle

Dwyer was brought before justice and was released on conditions to appear in Whitecourt Provincial Court on Apr. 12.
