Beaverlodge hoping to begin work on new fire hall by end of month

The Town of Beaverlodge is hoping to have work on its new fire hall start before the end of the month.

The initial cost of the fire hall was set at $2 million, however, the cost of materials for the project due to the supply chain issues have increased the cost to $2.9 million.

Despite the project costing a bit more than originally expected, Beaverlodge Mayor Gary Rycroft says this fire hall is needed for their community.

“The Town of Beaverlodge has never had a fire hall. Everything the fire department had has always been somebody else’s,” said Rycroft.

He says the new fire hall will allow them to become more independent.

“As far as the fire department goes, they will have room for training and more truck,” Rycroft explained. “It will easily fit six trucks, a training area, office area, compressors, washers dryers, showers.”

According to Rycroft, community members have been discussing the need for this project for several years.

“Firemen themselves have been fundraising for this for over ten years. It’s been on the table for probably six or seven years. Four and a half years ago it was a hot topic.”

At the recent meeting of County of Grande Prairie council, it approved providing $450,000 to help cover half of the budget for the shortfall.

If all goes to plan, the fire hall by late 2022 or early 2023.
