Piranhas return from Victoria after strong showing at nationals

Apr 11, 2022 | 12:34 PM

Three members of the Grande Prairie Piranhas Swim Club are back in the Swan City after participating in nationals in Victoria this past weekend.

Jordan Greber, Ollie Dawson and Marissa Laurin were the three swimmers who represented the Piranhas at nationals.

Greber participated in the 200 metre individual medley, 100 metre and 50 metre backstroke, 50 metre breaststroke, as well as the 400 metre individual medley.

Laurin took part in the 200 metre breaststroke along with the 100 metre and 50 metre backstroke with Greber.

Ollie participated in the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke.

At nationals, the three from Grande Prairie competed against the best youth swimmers in the country.

Coach Alex Dawson says he is proud of what his trio of swimmers was able to accomplish.

“A really successful week of swimming. They’re obviously there with their own goals and ambitions and I feel they came back with some really good lessons learned,” he explained.

Alex tells EverythingGP the swimmers all had strong swims throughout the five-day event.

Greber secured a bronze medal in the junior category of the 100 metre backstroke.

Ollie recorded a personal fastest swim in the 200 metre breaststroke, while Laurin ended up swimming just under her personal best time in the 100 metre backstroke event.

Alex says it was great to see these athletes perform so well on a massive stage.

“The guys are pretty young. Ollie was one of the youngest at the meet, so it was just a big learning experience for him seeing senior international swimmers competing,” he explained.

“Marissa elevated really well, it was her first seniors’ nationals, so it was really good preparation for the summer where she’s competing at her own age.

“For Jordan Greber, this was kind of her meet. She’s had a little bit more experience pre-COVID and she was contesting for junior finals this time.”

The three swimmers selected to represent the club were the most the Piranhas had ever sent to a national championship.

Alex hopes this year’s success can have a trickledown effect for years to come.

“We’ve got a lot of younger swimmers that are fast within their age, it’s just you need to make a U18 cup to go to that (national) meet. In a couple of years, there will be more swimmers that can add to that team, so it’ll just continue to grow.”

The Piranhas will participate in western nationals 10 days from now, where six members will be taking part.
