No sanction for Nixon

Apr 25, 2022 | 5:08 PM

EDMONTON – Alberta government house leader Jason Nixon will not be sanctioned for comments he made during an angry exchange that included Nixon swearing at the Speaker of the legislature.

Speaker Nathan Cooper says he considers the matter closed because Nixon withdrew the offending comments in a letter read aloud today by the deputy house leader.

About a month ago, Nixon was arguing in the house with Independent Central Peace-Notley MLA Todd Loewen and said he might try to change some of the rules about tabling documents.

The exchange drew attention because Nixon swore at the Speaker, who was trying to intervene.

Nixon apologized for the outburst.

Loewen says he felt Nixon was intimidating him to stop him from carrying out his duties as an elected member.

He says more should have been done to send a message that such behaviour won’t be tolerated.

Loewen was a United Conservative MLA but was turfed from caucus last year for publicly criticizing Premier Jason Kenney’s leadership.
