INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY

International Museum Day to be recognized by museums in Grande Prairie area

May 11, 2022 | 1:01 PM

Sunday, May 22nd has been recognized as International Museum day.

Locally, four museums in the Grande Prairie and surrounding area are marking the occasion.

The Grande Prairie Museum, Heritage Discovery Centre, the Veterans Memorial Gardens and Interpretive Centre, and the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum will all have special displays and exhibits on that day.

Charles Taws, the Curator at the Grande Prairie Museum, and Historical Resources Supervisor for the city explains what all will take place that day.

“All of the museums will be open with free admission from 10 am to 4 pm that day. There will be a free shuttle bus that will be running every 40 minutes between the sites, from 10:30 am to 4 pm. Each site will have special exhibits.”

Included in those special displays is a chance to build new dinosaurs out of foam bones at the Philip J Currie dinosaur museum, and the $10 and a Dream exhibit at the Heritage Discovery Centre.

The Grande Prairie Museum will have an exhibit called “Eyeshine, the Boreal forest at night”, while an Afghanistan War exhibit will be on display at the Veterans Memorial Gardens and Interpretive Centre.

Taws says they are trying to make it as easy as possible for the public to take part in International Museum day celebrations.

“Not all of our sites charge admission, but those that do are not charging on that day. And by having the bus, anybody that does not have a car – if you are having trouble in getting to some of these sites – you will be able to take the bus – which is free – in order to get to those sites.”

“There will also be food trucks at each site as well.”

Taws says the first international museum day was held back in 1977.

“It is our first big kickoff to the season. And it is just a way to promote museums as being important for cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures, and development of mutual understanding and cooperation and peace among people.”
