Broken Tine Orchard near Rio Grande, AB has had its brand new product nominated for a 2022 Made in Alberta Reader’s Choice Award just two short months after being released to the public.

The Friceys Prairie Fruit Pops are produced in their facility and are made from haskap berries grown on the fourth-generation family farm and butterfat ice cream made in Alberta.

The Alde family has farmed the area since 1926 and started harvesting haskap berries in 2011 with around 20,000 plants now.

“It’s a real honour to be nominated to win a Made in Alberta award, there are several Peace Country producers in there as well so it’s great to see that local foods are being recognized,” says Kreg Alde of Broken Tine Orchard.

Alde says they had been working on the creamsicle product for two years before hitting the market.

“Kids are the greatest to have test because they are brutally honest and so we took them into some schools and hosted some tours. The response on having a creamsicle with real fruit wrapped around real butterfat ice cream made in Alberta as well, the response has been excellent!”

“We started making them around March. We’ve got everything set up in our facility out of Rio Grande. It’s been great, all of our equipment works well and we are hoping to expand in the fall to bring in another flavour of prairie fruit.”

Friceys Prairie Fruit Pops can be found in Grande Prairie at Wapiti Shell, Original Grocer and Shade Tree Chocolate Studio, in Beaverlodge at Walker’s IGA, and in Spirit River at the Byway Esso.

Alde says he’s hoping to be at some events this summer and showcase Friceys around the region.

You can vote in the 2022 Made in Albert Reader’s Choice Awards until May 24, 2022.
