County campgrounds open for the season

May 13, 2022 | 6:00 AM

Camping season opens on Friday, May 13 for County of Grande Prairie campgrounds.!

Six of the County of Grande Prairie’s campgrounds are open for online reservation options. These include Pipestone Creek, Hythe Municipal, Bear Lake, Demmit, Hommy and Kleskun Hill.

Group camping is available at Pipestone Creek and Bear Lake, while private group camping is at Bear Hill and Old Bezanson Townsite.

There will be a new $5 fee per night in all County campgrounds for a nightly fire permit.

County Parks and Recreation Manage Christine Rawlins said in a media release: “The fee is included when booking overnight camping and campers will still have self-serve access to firewood,”

“With this change, only visitors enjoying our campgrounds contribute to the cost of providing firewood, rather than all County residents through their municipal taxes.”

The change was implemented on January 1, 2022, and the fee would be refunded in the event of a fire ban.

Pipestone Creek goers will be able to enjoy a new trail starting in June.

Around seven kilometres of natural woodland trails have been installed thanks to the Alberta Environment and Parks Recreation Partnership Initiative grant.

Interpretive signage along the trails for local plants and wildlife will be added later this summer as well.
