Twistmasters hosting provincial championships Saturday

May 13, 2022 | 3:19 PM

Arm wrestlers from across the province are gathering in Grande Prairie this weekend for the 2022 Alberta Provincial Arm Wrestling Championships.

The Paradise Inn will be the host venue and the Northern Twistmasters is the host club.

Head coach Doug Curtiss says it is an open event and there are classes for everyone.

“This one is an open one, so it is open to everybody. If you’ve never arm-wrestled before you’re welcome to give it a try. I don’t know (if) provincials are the best place to make it your first event. There are some pretty talented people.”

Everything gets going Friday night with weigh-ins starting at 7 p.m. Weigh-ins start again Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The competition will start at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Curtiss adds some competitors are coming from a long way away.

“We heard that the Lethbridge club, that’s about the farthest south club that we know of that has regular practices and trains as a group. Word is they rented a small van or bus or something and they’re bringing up at least 20 people just from that club. We’re pretty excited about that.”

“There are clubs from Fort McMurray, Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, Airdrie.” He added.

Curtiss is hoping 70-80 competitors will show up and is expecting a lot of them to be from the Peace Country.

He says the club was first awarded the right to host in 2020 but COVID interrupted plans to host that year and in 2021.
