Albertans feeling ignored prompted UCP leadership run for Loewen

Jun 2, 2022 | 6:07 PM

Central Peace-Notley MLA Todd Loewen says he decided to run for the leadership of the United Conservative Party because in the last couple years, people in Alberta have felt ignored.

“We need to get back in touch with the average Albertan and start listening more and actually doing more too. I think we’ve seen a government that the style has been to talk a lot and do a little.”

“I think there is an opportunity now to have a change in the direction of government and I think a wide swath of common-sense conservatives haven’t felt like they’ve had a voice for awhile.”

Loewen says it is time to get the government and the UCP back on track. He adds leaders need to listen to caucus members because they are elected by their constituents.

“It seems like a lot of times we see MLAs representing the government to the people rather than representing the people to the government. That style needs to change. We need to be more collaborative.”

“A lot of times, too, we’ve seen where the government has been argumentative (with) anybody who doesn’t see things exactly their way.”

Loewen says leaders need to take time to listen to the people and the elected need to represent them.

He also thinks Alberta needs to take action when it comes to dealing with the federal government.

“Typically, what we’ve seen from the Alberta government in the past has been strongly-worded letters when we have damaging federal policies affecting Albertans’ lives.”

“We need to be able to take action and move forward on things that Albertans want to see done.”

Loewen says Albertans are ready for action and are ready to see the province’s relationship with Ottawa change.
