Grande Prairie Pride Society paints rainbow crosswalk

Jun 9, 2022 | 2:10 PM

The Grande Prairie Pride Society hosted their 7th Annual Pride Painting on the crosswalk on 103rd Avenue and 98th Street near City Hall.

Johnathan Clarkson, Board Member of the Grande Prairie Pride Society says that he is super proud of how far the City of Grande Prairie has come with supporting Pride.

“The last three years, watching that support grow and seeing more people show up, I mean just three years ago, I think there was five or six of us painting the crosswalk and also, of course, somebody had to do a burnout on the crosswalk too and everything and that’s just changed.”

After referring to the crosswalk event three years ago and talking about the differences now, Clarkson said it’s completely different.

“People are showing up smiling, waving, and honking their horns as they drive by as we paint the crosswalk, it’s just phenomenal to see the support when I moved here when I was 8 years old and even when I came out when I was 32 years old, Grande Prairie was at a different place and we’ve grown so much over the last decade.”

Clarkson said he looks forward to seeing more residents from our community out and enjoying the events they have planned this weekend:

Clarkson said he is super thankful for the residents of Grande Prairie coming out and showing support, adding this month has been full of firsts; “from the raising of the Pride Flag at NWP to Pride Month Proclamations by the City of Grande Prairie, but there is still more work to do.”
