June 21 Alberta Crop Report

Jun 29, 2022 | 7:00 AM

The Alberta Crop Report from June 21st says almost three-quarters of Peace region crops are above normal condition, despite drowned out acres from heavy rain.

The rain across the entire province ended the prolonged drought from 2021, and while the wet weather was welcome in most places, many places reported overland flooding.

In the Peace region, precipitation over the week of June 14-20 ranged from 15 to 50 millimeters.

Some of the drowned-out acres and areas that had seeds washed away as a result of heavy rains, and are not likely to be re-seeded this growing season.

Around 73 per cent of crops in the region are rated good and seven per cent are rated excellent, which is above normal condition.

Spring seeded cereals are almost a week behind, but are still at the beginning of the tillering stage of development according to the report.

Soil moisture in the Peace improved in both surface and sub-surface reserves by five and six per cent, respectively.

Sub-surface soil moisture is rated at one per cent poor, 14 per cent fair, 58 per cent good and 27 per cent excellent.

Tame hay conditions are faring slightly worse than other pastures, with eleven per cent poor, 35 per cent fair, 50 per cent good and two per cent excellent.

Pasture is seeing nine per cent poor, 35 per cent fair, 54 per cent good and two per cent excellent.
