The July 12 crop report from Alberta Agriculture says 78.1 per cent of the Peace Region crop was in good to excellent condition as of that date.

The five-year average for this time of year is 57.3 per cent, the 10-year average is 62.5.

The breakdown by per cent for crops rating good to excellent in the Peace is:

  • 82.8 for spring wheat
  • 77.7 for canola
  • 75.6 for oats
  • 73.7 for peas
  • 72.9 for barley

The report also says almost half of the haying was complete as of July 12, ahead of the five-year average of 40 per cent. Yield is estimated at 2.3 tons per acre, the five-year average is 1.3 tons.

Seventy-two per cent of the hay is rated good to excellent.

The report also says around 90 per cent of surface and subsurface soil moisture was rated in good to excellent condition, with two per cent rated excessive.

Excess moisture is an issue in the central parts of the region which is stressing crops and delaying their development. Most cereals are in the head emergence stage, around par with normal.
