Toews questions if leadership race rival’s proposal will pass in the legislature

EDMONTON – Alberta’s former finance minister, Grande Prairie-Wapiti MLA Travis Toews has added his voice to those questioning whether a proposed bill giving Alberta the option to reject federal laws would pass in the legislature.

The bill idea is part of Danielle Smith’s platform in the United Conservative party race to replace Jason Kenney as party leader and premier.

Smith says if she wins on October 6th, she would immediately bring in a law granting her government the discretion to refuse to enforce federal laws or court decisions it deems an intrusion on provincial rights or interests.

Legal scholars say such a bill would be illegal and unenforceable, but Smith says they need to send a message to Ottawa to protect Alberta’s interests.
