ELM TREE PRUNING

City reminds residents of elm tree pruning ban

Jul 28, 2022 | 11:52 AM

City residents are reminded that it is illegal to prune elm trees from April 1st to September 30th, due to a province-wide ban on the practice during that time.

The ban is in place over those months in order to prevent the spread of dutch elm disease, which is done by elm bark beetles that are attracted to the smell of freshly cut elm wood.

Since these beetles commonly fly during the spring and summer months, elm tree pruning is banned during that time.

Anyone with an elm tree on their property is asked to contact the City’s Parks Operations at 3-1-1 after September 30th, in order to make arrangements to have the tree pruned during the fall and winter months when the beetles are less populous.
