New nickname for County’s NWJHL franchise

The County of Grande Prairie’s junior hockey team is undergoing a name change.

After years of being known as the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings, the team will now be known as the County of Grande Prairie Wheat Kings.

General Manager Kyle Chapple says the change comes after their major sponsorship with JDA Oilfield coming to an end.

“They have been a wonderful sponsor for the organization for many years and have done a lot to really keep the program going strong. There was just an agreement there that it was just time to make a change.”

Chapple thanked JDA Oilfield Services for their long-time sponsorship, adding they offered a lot to make the program run for many years.

He adds a new logo has been created with the name change, but the club will keep its black, white, and silver colour scheme.

“Being a part of the County, it was something that was important to us with the farming background in the County. That was part of the reasoning with making it the Wheat Kings.”

Chapple adds player recruitment efforts for the coming season are going well.

“We did not have a lot of turnover from last season after a nice little playoff run last year. We have a lot of returning players and did not have a ton of holes to fill, but there is going to be some good competition at camp and moving into the early part of the season.”

The Wheat Kings lost to the Fort St John Huskies in the 2022 NWJHL final.
