Busy weekend at Evergreen Park August 19-21

Aug 19, 2022 | 10:56 AM

As the summer continues on, so do events at Grande Prairie’s Evergreen Park.

The Horses

Every weekend up until August 28, the Horses are at the J.D.A Raceway Saturdays and Sundays starting at 1:15 p.m.

There are 12 races on the schedule this weekend, six each day.

Saturday’s feature race is the Marathon Series Leg 3 – a stakes race. It will be the fifth of the day and feature five horses chasing $9,000 in purse money, there will also be barn tours taking place on Saturday for the last time this season.

Half the races are claiming races, which means after each race, any of the horses could end up with new owners.

On Sunday, August 21, it’s Family Day at the raceway, with face paint and a dig in the sand pile for ice cream prizes for the kids. Race five on Sunday is called the Alberta Community Thoroughbred Racing Association Alberta Bred Stakes with a $9,500 purse.

It’s free to enter the grounds to watch the races.

Grande Sunset Theatre

Another throwback movie will be on the big screen at the Grande Sunset Theatre Friday, August 19.

The outdoor drive-in theatre is playing 1996’s “Twister”, with gates opening at 8:45 p.m. and the show starting at 9:45 p.m.

Tickets can be bought in advance on Eventbrite; 10$ cheaper than at the gates (cash only).

There are only six more weekends of movie showings after August 19.
