Quebec official says Omicron-targeted bivalent vaccine ready in ‘less than two weeks’

Aug 24, 2022 | 11:17 AM

MONTREAL — Quebec’s public health director says a bivalent COVID-19 vaccine targeting both the original strain of COVID-19 and the Omicron variant should be available in less than two weeks.

Dr. Luc Boileau made the comments today in Montreal, even though Canadians are still waiting on Health Canada’s approval of bivalent vaccine submissions from Moderna and Pfizer.

Boileau says once a bivalent shot is available it will immediately replace the older-generation vaccines for distribution across the province.

The proposed bivalent vaccines are designed to recognize specific mutations in the spike protein of the Omicron BA. 1 subvariant.

Boileau says the province is advancing the schedule for booster doses, allowing residents as young as 18 to book appointments today instead of at the end of next week.

All Quebecers 18 and over are eligible for a booster if it’s been at least five months since their last dose — or three months since their last COVID-19 infection.
