Grande Prairie Mayor Addresses “verbal abuse” at City Hall

Aug 27, 2022 | 6:35 PM

Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton has released a statement regarding the verbal abuse against Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland that took place at City Hall on Friday, August 26.

“I want to address the disgusting display of hatred and abuse we witnessed yesterday. The confrontation at City Hall captured on video does not reflect the welcoming spirit our region is known for. We do not need to agree on every issue to treat each other with basic respect.

As Mayor, I have the opportunity to meet with politicians of all political stripes. I always appreciate the opportunities our democracy gives me to have constructive conversations with others, even those who hold opposing views.

I want to express my gratitude to the City staff who calmly de-escalated the situation and acted in a highly professional manner despite the stressful circumstance.

The Deputy Prime Minister came to a part of the country where there is a great divergence of views between many residents and Canada’s governing party. During her time here, I was able to witness many individuals express their concerns with federal policies in a very constructive, respectful manner. This is the Grande Prairie that I know and love. A Grande Prairie where neighbours are treated with dignity and where opposing views are respected. A Grande Prairie that has opened its doors to hundreds of Ukrainian refugees. And a Grande Prairie that continually finds strength in its diversity. This is the Grande Prairie I know and love and we will not let the actions of a few define who we are as a community or who we are as a nation.

What has always made this country strong is our ability to respect differing opinions, perspectives and beliefs that are held by every Canadian. Our community holds strong views and treats each other and visitors with respect and dignity. No one should be subjected to abusive behaviour.

I implore all Canadians to raise the level of political discourse in this country and to see the humanity in those you may disagree with. Thank you.”
