Storm home opener highlights busy local sports weekend

It is time to get the 2022-23 season going for the Grande Prairie Storm.

The Storm will host Bonnyville in their regular season opener. Face-off will be at 7 pm

A fan festival with shooting cages, a BBQ, live music, and kid’s activities will start at 4 pm.

Everything takes place at the Bonnett’s Energy Centre.

NWJHL

Northwest Junior Hockey League, High Level, and Grande Cache are hosting pre-season showcases this weekend.

In High Level. Sexsmith plays La Crete Friday and Peace River on Saturday. The Navigators play La Crete Sunday.

In Grande Cache Friday, Fairview plays Dawson Creek then plays Fort St John on Saturday. Also Saturday, Dawson Creek faces the County Wheat Kings. The Wheat Kings will play Fort St. John Sunday.

Besides those games, Beaverlodge will host the Wheat Kings Friday night at 8:15.

MPFL

Mighty Peace Football League Friday, the Grande Prairie Phoenix visit Peace Wapiti Academy. 4:30 kick-off at CKC Field. St. Joe’s will host Fort McMurray at 8 pm also at CKC Field. Valleyview is in Edson for a 4 pm kick-off.

Other happenings

Wolves soccer visits Keyano Saturday and Sunday. The cross-country running season continues Saturday at SAIT in Calgary.

The Peace Country Barrel Racing Association is hosting its 20th-anniversary finals Friday through Sunday at Evergreen Park.

The Grande Prairie Centaurs play the Strathcona Druids Saturday in Edmonton. Game time will be 5:30 p.m.

There will be a Norco Dirt Series mountain biking try-it clinic Saturday at the Wapiti Nordic Ski Centre. There is a session for youth ages 11 to 17 from 9 am to noon and an adult session from 1 to 4 pm. Registration and more information can be found at www.dirtseries.com

Peace Country Ringette is hosting a Try Ringette Event Sunday. It will go from noon to 1 pm at the Crosslink County Sportsplex. It is free to try. Registration and more information can be found under the events tab at www.cometryringette.ca

The Beaverlodge Curling Club will host its annual general meeting Monday. The start time will be 7:30 in the lounge.
