Organizers hoping to beat last year’s total in this year’s Smile Cookie fundraiser

Organizers are hoping this year’s Smile Cookie fundraiser surpasses last year’s total.

The Tim Horton’s locations in Grande Prairie will be selling the specially made cookies from September 19 until September 25 with all the money going to the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation.

The Foundation’s philanthropy engagement officer Sally Bellerose says they collected $68,000 last year.

“This year, the funds that are collected from this campaign will go towards cancer care in Grande Prairie, specifically through the cancer clinic at the new Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.”

“Exactly what that looks like is going to be determined by the unit manager and the powers who be who know what our community needs most to support cancer care.”

The Sargent Family Foundation, Sean Sargent Toyota, and Ken Sargent GMC Buick bought 21,000 cookies to get the fundraiser started.

Bellerose says this is always a big boost for the campaign.

“That takes a little bit of pressure off of the stores to able to push those batches out and give them time to get them out and get them delivered to schools, the hospital staff, (and) city and county departments as well.”

The cookies were delivered this week. Bellerose says they were “spreading smiles and getting so many back.”

“Lots of thank yous to Sean Sargent and his team for the generosity in helping spread these smiles and just a lot of excitement, especially at the schools with the kids who remember last year or the years before getting their cookies and saying ‘I remember this! I remember this! The cookie man is here!”

Bellerose says they visited 34 schools. She calls it a busy week but a lot of fun.
