Number of opioid deaths in Grande Prairie down in July

The Alberta Government has reported on its second quarter of 2022 for the Alberta substance use surveillance system.

In the first seven months of this year, Grande Prairie has seen 24 drug poisoning deaths. Below is the breakdown with available causes for some:

• January – 4 (1 cocaine)
• February – 1 (methamphetamine)
• March – 6 (1 cocaine, 1 methamphetamine)
• April – 3
• May – 6 (1 alcohol, 2 methamphetamine, 1 benzodiazepine, 2 pharmaceutical opioids)
• June – 2 (1 cocaine)
• July – 2

In Alberta, 884 drug poisoning deaths have been recorded from January to July. The number of deaths per month has been declining since May in the province.

• 73 per cent were in private residences where the deceased lived
• 18 per cent were in public areas
• 9 per cent in “other facility” (which can include but is not limited to a private residence where the ownership is unclear, shelters, long-term care facilities, addictions facilities, correctional facility/detainment center, and health care center if the consumption of substances that caused death occurred at the health care center)

The supervised consumption sites in the City saw 1,858 visits in Q2, slightly less than 2,063 in Q1. There were 46 adverse events that were attended to at the consumption sites in Q2.
