One of two men charged after the murder of a Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation man in 2019 has pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter.

Harlin Dallas Martineau entered the plea Friday in Grande Prairie court.

An agreed statement of facts says the victim, Barry Goodswimmer, was assaulted at a Sturgeon Lake home by another man. He was sitting down when he was knocked to the floor. The other man hit him with a golf club until it broke.

The statement also says Martineau then held the victim down by the arms while the other man beat him with a baseball bat.

Goodswimmer was alive when he was taken away from the house by the two accused in an ATV. He was left on a trail

His body was later found in a marshy area.

Martineau is due back in court November 7. A Gladue report, something that outlines the life and family history of the accused, will be compiled.

The second accused, Allan William Hamelin, is due to stand trial for murder and interfering with a dead body October 17 to November 4 in Grande Prairie.
