Clairmont residents asked for feedback on potential ice-skating surfaces

Sep 28, 2022 | 11:37 AM

The County of Grande Prairie is asking residents in Clairmont living in Whispering Ridge and Westlake Estates for feedback on winter recreational spaces in their community.

Options are being explored by the County for safe and accessible places that families and residents can enjoy over the winter months.

Locations have yet to be determined, but larger spaces for ice surfaces are being considered for various green spaces.

Smaller rinks will still exist through the Neighbourhood Ice Surface Program.

The County has begun delivering door hangers to households in the specified subdivisions to access an online survey, which is open until October 7, 2022.

In the August 26, 2022 Committee of the Whole meeting, outdoor recreation ice surfaces were a topic of discussion following findings reviewed from 2021’s pilot project on stormwater ponds becoming skating surfaces.

Administration acknowledged the public safety concerns that happened during the pilot project including unexpected surface water, significant air temperature fluctuations, uncertain chemical makeup of stormwater ponds, and ice thickness inconsistencies.

Councilors decided the exploration of land-based surfaces would be worth looking into and wants to hear public feedback, with the possibility of discontinuing the stormwater pond skating surfaces.

After the survey is completed, feedback and Administration findings on possible enhanced ice surface locations will be presented at the October 25 Council Meeting.

A formal decision on stormwater ponds will not be made until approved by a motion of Council.
