13th annual Sisters in Spirit Memorial Walk and candlelight vigil in Grande Prairie

Oct 4, 2022 | 8:52 AM

On Tuesday October 4, communities across Canada are holding vigils to honour missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.

In Grande Prairie, the 13th annual Sisters in Spirit Memorial Walk will start at 5 p.m. at the Spirit Sisters Rock on the NWP campus near the Community Clinic along the Muskoseepi trail.

A candlelight vigil will follow, as well as a dinner at the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre.

If you want to participate; wear blue, bring your drums and rattles, and all jingle dress dancers are being aked to join the event.

It is unknown how many MMIWG and 2SLGBTQQIA+ there are in Canada, but in 2014 the RCMP reported over 1,000 between the years of 1980 and 2012.

The Government of Canada (separate from federal government) released plans in June 2021 for a national inquiry to address the tragedy of as many as 4,000 MMIWG and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.
