Three projects for carbon sequestration exploration in Grande Prairie region approved by province

Oct 6, 2022 | 11:39 AM

Alberta has selected 19 new proposals for the Carbon Sequestration Tenure Management in the second request for full project proposals.

Three of the selected projects are in the greater Grande Prairie area:

  • Grande Prairie Net Zero Gateway; NorthRiver Midstream Inc., Keyera Corp., and Entropy Inc. for a potential sequestration hub north of Grande Prairie
  • Greenview Region CCS Project, ARC Resources Ltd. for a potential sequestration hub southeast of Grande Prairie
  • The Grande Prairie CCS Hub, Enhance Energy Inc. for a potential sequestration hub northeast of Grande Prairie

The province says the next steps for the companies are exploring how to safely develop carbon storage hubs.

If companies can safely execute that their projects can provide safe storage for captured carbon dioxide, the projects will go through rigorous testing to be approved by the Alberta Energy Regulator.

Energy Minister Sonya Savage says “Alberta is a global leader with a proven track record in employing carbon capture on a commercial scale. We’ve now selected 25 proposals this year. We are moving as rapidly and safely as anywhere in the world. This province is embracing a low-carbon future while ensuring that carbon capture and sequestration is deployed safely, responsibly, and strategically in the best interest of Albertans.”
