The Grande Prairie Fire Department wants to remind residents to have a working carbon monoxide detector after a scare at a business.

On Friday, October 14, the Grande Prairie Fire Department responded to a carbon monoxide alarm activating in a business north of downtown.

On arrival, firefighters found high carbon monoxide levels in the business and a connecting business as well.

Occupants of both businesses were experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms and five EMS and three fire department units were needed to evacuate several animals and take 18 people to the hospital.

The source of the carbon monoxide poisoning was a contractor working in another connected business operating a gas-powered tool.

The Grande Prairie Fire Department would like to remind residents to have a working carbon monoxide detector as it’s credited to saving multiple lives.
