Twenty teams, 300 players coming to Northern Legacy Warriors Academy Showcase

Nov 3, 2022 | 6:59 PM

Twenty teams and 300 players will be here this weekend for the Northern Legacy Warriors Academy Showcase.

There are U15 and U18 teams coming from BC and Alberta.

President and owner Dave Oakes says all the teams in those age groups from the Premier Hockey League will be here.

“I’ve been planning it since July. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our league, for the organization, for the community to really showcase who we are, what we can do, and really bring a lot of excitement to Grande Prairie this weekend.”

“I know that our parents are extremely excited. The kids are extremely excited. I’m extremely exhausted but excited at the same time.”

Oakes says he started the academy late in 2018. He sees it as a way to personalize development.

“This year, we have four teams. We have about 80 kids through our program year-round through the academy hockey teams and the Premier League.”

“When you factor in the spring hockey and our development camps, we probably reach anywhere from 200 to 350 kids in a year.”

The academy has four boys teams, U11, U15 and U18 teams in Grande Prairie and hopes to add a U13 girls team next season. There is also a U15 team in Fort St. John.

Games start Friday morning and go all weekend. Most of them will be played at the Crosslink County Sportsplex but there will one at the Bonnett’s Energy Centre Friday afternoon and there is one Friday morning at the Dave Barr Arena.
