Busy weekend in local sports coming up

UPDATE: The registration night that was set for tonight at the Beaverlodge Curling Club has been postponed. A make-up date is not yet available.

It is going to be a very busy weekend in local sports in the Peace Country.

Besides the Storm and Northwest Junior Hockey League, there are two hockey tournaments, the Mighty Peace Football champions will be decided, Wolves volleyball is at home, and two organizations are holding ski sales.

The rundown is as follows:

The Storm will host Brooks Friday at 7 pm and Fort McMurray Saturday at 6 pm. The Storm are 4-10-3 so far this season.

The North Peace Hockey League schedule, courtesy of DiscoverthePeaceCountry.com Friday, Spirit River in Grimshaw and Fort St. John in Manning. Saturday, Grande Prairie in Spirit River, Valleyview at Falher and Dawson Creek in Fort St. John.

Northwest Junior Hockey League Friday, Sexsmith in Beaverlodge, Wheat Kings in Fairview, Dawson Creek in Fort St. John and La Crete in Peace River. Saturday, Sexsmith in Fairview, Peace River in Beaverlodge and La Crete in Dawson Creek. 8 pm face-off for all. Sunday, La Crete in Beaverlodge for a 2 pm start.

Grande Prairie Minor Hockey will have two officials clinics in Grande Prairie Saturday and one in Valleyview Sunday. Registration and more information are available at www.gphockey.com

Eight Grande Peace Athletic Club teams are hosting GPAC Days Saturday at the Design Works Centre. U13,15,17, and 18 teams are taking part. There are games on the north rink at 11:30 am, 2, 430, and 7 pm. South rink games go at 12:15 and 5 pm.

The Northern Legacy Warriors U15 and U18 hockey teams are hosting a showcase Friday through Sunday at the Crosslink County Sportsplex, Bonnett’s Energy Centre, and the Dave Barr. Twenty teams and 300 players from BC and Alberta will be taking part.

Mighty Peace Football League, St. Joe’s will play Sexsmith in the Peace Bowl Saturday. 3 pm at CKC Field. Also Saturday, Valleyview is in Whitecourt for the Athabasca Bowl for a 2 pm kick-off at Graham Acres Field in Whitecourt.

Wolves volleyball will host Lethbridge College Friday at 6 and 8 pm and Ambrose University Saturday at 3 and 5 pm. Friday’s game is School Night. All area schools have been invited to come to the games at no cost. Saturday is Pink Out, where everyone coming is asked to wear pink. The Wolves have adopted pink as one of their team colours this year. Basketball will visit Lethbridge College Friday at 6 and 8 pm and Ambrose University Saturday at 4 and 6 pm. Women’s games are first for all.

Nitehawk will hold its annual Ski & Snowboard Swap and Sale Friday and Saturday at the TARA Centre at Evergreen Park. Drop-off is on Friday from 4 to 8 pm. The sale is on Saturday. Viewings must be pre-booked through the Nitehawk website.

The Wapiti Nordic Ski Club ski swap goes Saturday. It will be a drop-in sale from 9 am to Noon at the Steve Cooper Lodge. Drop-off Friday from 6 to 8 pm, also at the lodge. More information here.
