NWJHL and AJHL weekend recap

Many games were played around the Peace region over the first snowy weekend of the 2022-23 hockey season.

AJHL

The Grande Prairie Storm played host to the Brooks Bandits on Friday, November 4.

The Bandits won 5-0, with GP Storm goaltender, Adam Kelly making 33 saves.

The Storm also played host to the Fort McMurray Oil Barons on Saturday, losing 5-2.

Storm goalie Connor Mackenzie made 33 saves for mental health, and forward Ashton McNelly scored twice.

The Storms’ next match-up is Wednesday, November 9, at Grant Fuhr Arena against the Spruce Grove Saints.

NWJHL

The North West Junior Hockey League was full of action this past weekend.

On Friday:

  • The Fort St John Huskies downed the Dawson Creek Kodiaks 10-3
  • The County of Grande Prairie Wheat Kings blew past the Fairview Flyers 9-3
  • The La Crete Lumber Barons axed off the North Peace Navigators in overtime 5-4

On Saturday:

  • The Sexsmith Vipers won 5-1 against the Flyers
  • The Kodiaks beat the Lumber Barons 6-3
  • Beaverlodge Blades were shutout against the Navigators, 5-0.

The Wheat Kings sit atop of the standings with 12 wins and no losses so far this season, the Vipers are second and the Huskies are third.

The next games start Thursday at the Crosslink County Sportsplex, where the Wheat Kings welcome the Navigators, and the Huskies go to Fairview to take on the Flyers.
