The Art Gallery of Grande Prairie welcomes two new exhibits

Nov 22, 2022 | 12:52 PM

Two new locally sourced exhibits are at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie; with one from Northwestern Polytechnic and the other by a local Indigenous artist.

The first exhibit ‘What’s Held’ is about memory, land, and identity and explores ways of memorializing, mapping, and holding onto significant sites, keeping our memories and stories of these places alive and well.

The exhibit itself features fifteen pieces from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts collection and then five drawings and prints by Callihoo Ligtvoet.

The other, ‘The Neon Kitten’ exhibit supplied by NWP out of their permanent collection. It’s a vibrant exhibition of ’70s, ’80s, and 90’s inspired art and is supposed to showcase the student experience and perspective, which is usually a time for rapid evolution and growth. The exhibit aims to showcase student life at NWP or any campus around the world.

This exhibit will feature art from critically acclaimed Canadian artists such as Rita Letendre, Rene Marcil, and Brian Marion along with others, and will be curator Melanie Jenner’s first major exhibition for the Art Gallery.

The ‘What’s Held’ exhibit will have an Artist talk with curator Kiona Callihoo Ligvoet at 6 p.m. for visitors to attend and learn more about the collection.

Both collections will be free to the public, however, ‘The Neon Kitten’ exhibit isn’t open till Thursday, November 24, when the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie will host an Opening Reception, following the ‘What’s Held’ artist talk, starting at 7 p.m.
