Victims of gender-based violence to access additional support through 211 Alberta

Dec 9, 2022 | 5:58 PM

EDMONTON, AB – 211 provides Albertans with access to information, programs and referrals on a wide range of community, social, health and government services.

As of December 9, 2022, the government announced it will be partnering with Women and Gender Equality Canada to provide crisis supports through 211 for people who are experiencing gender-based violence.

An additional $3 million will go towards creating critical wrap-around support through 211 that gender-based violence survivors can access.

Parliamentary Secretary for Status of Women, Tanya Fir, said in a press release, “When a person is in crisis, finding help should not be difficult, confusing or time-consuming.”

“If you find yourself in a situation where you need help, this 24/7 service through 211 will help to ensure that you get the help and resources you deserve. I’m proud that we are taking strides in supporting survivors of gender-based violence,” she added.

Those reaching for a crisis lifeline will now have additional support for counseling, health care and legal services among many others.

According to the province, sexual violence is the most under-reported crime in Canada with most incidents occurring against women and girls.

A release from the province explains, “Alberta’s government is committed to preventing gender-based violence in our province by shifting to a culture of consent, engaging men and boys, improving our response to gender-based violence and supporting survivors. This funding is an important step towards that commitment.”

In late November 2022, the Alberta Government announced it would be doubling funding for 211 over the next three years, to learn more head to the 211 website online.
