On December 3, CNRL presented a cheque to the Hythe & District Recreational Society during a community Christmas party for $100,000.

The building in which the society resides has a $1,500,000 budget to refurbish the facility roof, along with upgrades on the inside.

John Lieverse, Production Superintendent for Grande Prairie Central at CNRL says the company felt compelled to commit to providing $300,000 over three years to the society.

“We’ve been part of the community for many years and the facility certainly meets the needs of the town, the residents, and rural residents around Hythe.”

Lieverse says the next cheque will be presented to the Board of Directors in 2023 and again in 2024.

“They certainly have a need for this and they’ve got a very good project planned to upgrade the facility.”

He says when the commitment was announced on the night, “everybody was very happy about it!”

“It’s a facility that use to be a school and when the Board of Directors took it over for the community, it certainly needs work and it will go a long way towards completing the work needed,” he says.

The building is used for the local food bank, thrift store, children’s play-time, community gymnasium, and paying businesses that rent space; according to Lieverse.

CNRL made the decision to commit financially to the community project as a plant has been near the town for many years and “this is a way of supporting the people who work at our facilities and also the residents that we often affect with our day-to-day activities.”
