Environment Canada says the Arctic air mass continues to bring extremely cold temperatures to Alberta. The Peace region has seen some records broken.

Most of these records were broken during the morning hours, but some were late in the evening.

In Beaverlodge:

  • On Tuesday, a new record low of -39.3 C replaced the record of -39.0 C set in 1921.
  • On Wednesday, a preliminary new record of -41.2 C beat the previous record of -37.1 C in 1961.

In Peace River:

  • On Tuesday, a new record of -42.2 C was set. The previous record of -40.0 C was set in 1970.
  • On Wednesday, the preliminary new record is -44.9 C broke the 1933 record of -38.0C.

The weather office says the results are unofficial information at this time but previous records have been derived from historical reports and stations in each geographic area.

Extreme cold temperatures are expected to stay up until this Christmas weekend.
